Emani Carter was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia and has been doing art since she was little. She is a teaching community artist and designer with little to no separation of art in the other areas of her life. Creativity surrounds her in all of the things that she does and she brings it into every space she enters. Emani focuses on accessible art practices, teaching, and advocacy and enjoys a good hike, yoga, and river days. She holds a B.S. in Visual Communication Design and will graduate with an M.F.A. in Community Arts come May 2023.

Genna Clemen is a Midwest raised, student of the world, educator and visual storyteller. With a background in graphic design and digital media, they use art as a tool for exploration, problem-solving and education. Their work explores human relationships with the environment, community care and urban ecology. As an educator, they enphasize student-led and adaptable learning for all ages.

Congratulations to past Keswick President & CEO Carmel Roques

Congratulations to past Keswick President & CEO Carmel Roques on her appointment as Maryland Secretary of Aging! Cheers to another solid choice by Governor-elect Wes Moore in a cabinet of experts in their field. In my role as current President and CEO of Keswick, and former VP of Community Health at Keswick under Carmel’s leadership from 2016-2019, and as Immediate Past Board Chair of LeadingAge Maryland, I wholeheartedly support this excellent choice for ALL older Marylanders… of today and tomorrow.

Carmel Roques understands both the determinants that get in the way of aging well AND the power we each hold in our own aging future, with leadership experience across the socio-economic spectrum in senior living, post-acute and long-term care, and community health. She uses her voice in the many rooms, and realms both public and private, that affect our aging present and future – in health care, aging services, housing – with a perspective that understands the need for systems that simply make more sense, particularly for underserved communities. In imagining what becomes possible when experts are positioned to make real change, like Laura Herrara-Scott as our new Secretary of Health, and Carmel Roques as Secretary of Aging, I see logic, innovation, collaboration, and great hope.

LeadingAge Maryland had encouraged the Governor-elect to appoint a Secretary who will clearly and consistently serve as a voice for older Marylanders, in partnership with others. LeadingAge Maryland is ready. Keswick is ready. Yes, let us all be fast, bold and fearless. Thank you for your choice, Governor-elect Moore – and Congratulations! What a week for Maryland!

Staffing levels begin to rise

Nearly three years after COVID-19 began decimating staffing levels at long-term care facilities nationwide, the health care sector hardest hit by the pandemic is beginning to see employment numbers rise.

Leaders at local senior facilities say they have bolstered their staffs over the last year but still must rely on nursing agencies to fill many positions — an expensive solution.

“I’d say the biggest challenge during the pandemic was with recruiting and retaining nursing assistants and medical technicians,” said Phil Golden, executive director and principal at Springwell in Baltimore’s Mount Washington neighborhood. “The team here did band together and we made it through, but it was definitely a challenge.”
