Abstraction In Sound – Art Exhibition

Abstraction, as well as other forms of non-representational painting, have often been inspired by music, from the connections between Kandinsky and Wagner to the influence of Jazz in the works of Norman Lewis. In this class, participants practiced techniques for making abstract marks and then listened to music to understand how our visual choices are informed by what we hear.

Each week, we learned about 3 different artists, including Jackson Pollock, Alma Thomas, and Sam Gilliam. We listened to various music to inspire our painting, including Mozart, Jazz, and Motown. The artworks on view in this exhibition share the results of our experimentation and reflections on what we heard and learned during our studio explorations.
