CEU Program – Providing Equitable Care for LGBTQ+ Older Adults in Residential Settings – Challenges and Ethical Considerations

Jennifer Marie Brown earned a Bachelor of Science from Union College and a Master’s in Education from Springfield College. She is a long-time LGBTQ rights activist in Minneapolis, St. Paul. Most recently, Washington, D.C. Since joining Seabury Resources for Aging in 2011, she has been an active supporter and participant in Seabury’s Out & About program, which works to fight social isolation amongst LGBTQ older adults and currently serves on the Montgomery County LGBTQ caregiver advisory committee.
This seminar reviews the unique aspects of the LGBTQ+ Older Adults’ journey and lived experiences for insight and understanding. The focus is on issues that impact quality of care and ethical dilemmas in providing equitable service to ‘Queer’ Older Adults and their loved ones.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the lived and historical experiences of ‘Queer’ Older Adults and gain insight into the patient/client needs.
2. Identify and comprehend the legal factors pertaining to possible conflicts between the Queer Older Adults’ family of choice and other interested parties.
3. Discuss ethical considerations and dilemmas in providing equitable care given potential conflicts of rights’ between Queer Older Adults and other patients/residents.
Attendees will earn:
3.0 Category Social Work credits approved for social workers through the National Association of Social Workers
3.0 Ethics credits approved for Certified Case Managers through CCMC
0.25 CEUs by The National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC)
